Plot summary

After the death of his wife, Richard hires a recently divorced housekeeper, Emma. Soon finding himself falling for her, his emotionally destructive son, Wendell, also grows attached to Emma, threatening to tear apart the family's already hostile relationship.

Not every actor can direct and this movie

Not every actor can direct and this movie proves the point. I tolerated half of it and at least it was free on Tubi. I trusted mostly Holly Hunter but this mess is unsalvageable. I don’t know if the book it’s based on is any better and I will never find out. There are lots of better movies to watch or rewatch.

Whenever you hear that a film has been credited to Alan Smithee, it's a REALLY bad sign. That means the filmmaker is so disillusioned with the finished product, he wants his name removed from the credits. When I found out that this movie, which I had never heard of before, not only was the last motion picture to use the Alan Smithee monicker but also starred one of my five favorite actresses of all time, I had to give it a gander. The good news is that it's not a total embarrassment. The bad news is that it still isn't very good. There's nothing particularly bombastic here aside from Sutherland's performance, which is truly atrocious. It just feels dead in the water - there's no passion, no drama, nothing to draw the viewer into this world. Sometimes it feels overly scripted and other times it feels badly improvisational. This is just mediocre soap opera material here, and I think Sutherland taking on duties as actor AND director made both roles suffer immensely. I don't think Hunter is capable of giving a bad performance, but the relationship between her and Moriarty feels creepy rather than convincing - almost like a prelude to him chopping her into pieces and shoving her in the freezer. It's just a very odd, peculiar little duck of a movie. I don't know if it necessarily deserved its fate, but I can honestly say I'll most likely never think of it ever again. - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook)
