Plot summary

Shot over the course of ten years on both film and video, the film consists of a series of carefully composed tableaux of people and environments. Pedestrians shuffle across a bustling Beijing street, steelworkers linger outside a deserted factory, tourists laugh and scamper across a crowded beach, worshippers kneel to pray in a remote village. With a painterly eye for composition, Wang captures China as he sees it, calling to a temporary halt a land in a constant state of change.

An experimental art piece, full of various disconnected

An experimental art piece, full of various disconnected long shots of people existing in China. Some of them are at work, some of them are walking from place to place, some of them are staring into the camera, almost at the viewer. This isn't a movie for everyone, in fact I actually have a hard time recommending it to anyone, since it requires a very open mind and a lot of patience. Personally I think It's best viewed in segments: watch it for a while until something comes up or you get bored, then pause and come back to it later. Treat it like an art piece in a museum. You don't have to stand and look at it for an hour and a half, you can meander around and come back to it as you see fit.
