This is the story of a young teen

This is the story of a young teen accepting that he liked boys, but not ready to use the term gay. For the most part it was a good movie, well acted and used some parallels and symbolism to tell the story. What I thought was lacking is the ending, nothing was revealed on any of the main relationships. The majority of the movie dealt with the boy he liked and his best friend, but in both cases when the boy came out, while it did show their initial response, we don't know how it affected the relationship. Basically there was no emotional payoff to the two main story lines.

Cam Archer's overtly stylized view of childhood sexuality is harmed by the intended approach which feels far too distant. That said, I suspect this artist has fully realized his vision. Unfortunately, this vision and the way in which Archer tells his story feels forced and feels too vague.

This is undoubtedly one of the strangest and most unusual coming-of-age films that I have ever and probably will ever see. It is not entirely successful, and I feel confident that I won't be watching it again any time soon, but it certainly got under my skin, and I have to admire the filmmakers for remaining uncompromising and seemingly true to their vision. I also give a lot of credit and respect to young Stumpf, who is asked to do things in this movie that had to be scary and uncomfortable. He only has one other movie on his IMDb page, the horrible Madonna film THE NEXT BEST THING, but he comes across here naturally and without a shred of ingenue artificiality. It gets to be a bit heavy-handed at times and a plot point or two are a bit hard to swallow, but, limitations aside, I appreciate a film that I can honestly say is not quite like anything I've seen before. It's uncomfortable and unsettling, but I found it worth watching.
