Plot summary

John Candy is perfectly cast as a bumbling

John Candy is perfectly cast as a bumbling private eye. Director Paul Flaherty’s mystery-comedy Who’s Harry Crumb (1989) is an underrated John Candy comedy film. Flaherty delivers sight gags, witty wordplay, physical slapstick, colorful characters, complex criminal narrative, and a heartfelt hero in John Candy’s doofus detective Harry Crumb. Writers Peter Wortmann and Robert Conte really carefully craft an absurdist crime mystery with tons of clues. I think Who’s Harry Crumb? is actually a rather underrated comedy movie. John Candy is hysterical and lovable as the idiot private detective Harry Crumb. He bumbles and guesses his way to victory all while willing to get hurt doing ridiculous and embarrassing slapstick. Candy’s dry delivery is especially funny as he makes Harry sound even stupider than you’d think possible. Candy normally goes for bigger delivery, so it’s amusing to see him tone it down for the character to come across as even dumber than the other idiots herein.
