If one were to be harshly critical of this, there are quite a few cliches in the plotting (the gay best friend, the bullying, the denial, the predators etc.) but I felt that it emerged from all of that to be quite sweet and having established real empathy for most of the characters. Also, where these kinds of films often use adult actors to portray school-age characters in very adult situations and torpedo their credibility as a consquence - here the main crew pass for teenagers quite convincingly, I felt. While the various plot threads came together in a somewhat-predictable manner, I was very much up for the feel-good outcomes presented.Worth a look.

Who We Love attempts to explore the complexities of relationships in contemporary Dublin, but ultimately falls short of delivering an authentic representation of Irish culture and identity. While the film has an interesting premise, its execution leaves much to be desired, resulting in a portrayal that feels more like a caricature than a genuine reflection of the people and the vibrant city it aims to represent. From the outset, the film presents a visually appealing depiction of Dublin, with its picturesque landscapes and iconic landmarks. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes apparent that the characters inhabiting this city do not resonate with the authentic Irish experience. Instead of showcasing the rich diversity and nuances of Irish life, the film opts for stereotypes that feel forced and inauthentic. The characters, who should embody the spirit of Dublin, come across as exaggerated versions of what outsiders might perceive as "Irish." This disconnect can be jarring for viewers who are familiar with the culture and who expect a more nuanced portrayal. The acting in Who We Love contributes significantly to its shortcomings. While the cast may have talent, the performances often lack the depth and authenticity necessary to bring the characters to life. Instead of feeling like real people with genuine emotions, the characters often come across as one-dimensional, delivering lines that feel rehearsed rather than spontaneous. This lack of emotional resonance makes it challenging for the audience to invest in their journeys or empathize with their struggles. In a film that aims to tackle themes of love and identity, this failure to connect with the characters undermines the entire narrative. While the premise of Who We Love holds promise-exploring the intersections of love, identity, and societal expectations-the execution is hampered by clichéd dialogue and predictable plot twists. The film attempts to address important social issues but does so in a manner that feels superficial. Instead of delving deep into the complexities of relationships and the impact of societal norms on individual identities, the narrative often skims the surface, leaving viewers wanting more substance. Moreover, the film's pacing feels uneven, with certain scenes dragging on longer than necessary, while others feel rushed and underdeveloped. This inconsistency disrupts the flow of the story, making it difficult for viewers to remain engaged. The potential for a compelling exploration of love and identity is overshadowed by the film's inability to strike the right balance between storytelling and character development. In conclusion, Who We Love is a film that aspires to capture the essence of modern Dublin and the relationships that shape it but falls short in its execution. The lack of authenticity in character representation, combined with underwhelming performances and a disjointed narrative, detracts from its potential impact. While the premise is intriguing, the film ultimately fails to deliver a meaningful exploration of the themes it seeks to address. For viewers seeking a genuine portrayal of Irish life and relationships, Who We Love may leave them disappointed and longing for a more accurate and heartfelt representation.
