An adaptation of his own stage play, Noonan's film presents an often hilarious, often bleak, but always brutally honest exploration, with all the emotions that come to the surface in a sadly poignant look at dating and deception. It lives and dies on the performances and dialogue, both of which are utterly spellbinding. The initially charged and playful interactions eventually evolve into a long night of the soul, as the two would-be lovers get to know each other properly for the first time, and discover that all may not be as it seems. It all feels disarmingly real, full of pauses, misread cues, and nervous humour. Every line carries weight, and every silence threatens to reveal more than either character intends. A real night to remember, What Happened Was… stands as a brilliant showcase for Noonan's abilities as a writer, director, editor and actor, lingering in ambiguity, exploring how isolation, desire and fear can collide in subtle, unsettling ways.

Companion is a film that ambitiously attempts to explore

Companion is a film that ambitiously attempts to explore weighty themes, but perhaps takes on more than it can fully develop. On the surface, it engages with AI and robotic ethics, but its real substance lies in its poignant examination of domestic abuse, coercion, control, and the morally murky intersection of self-defence and violence. These elements add depth and a sense of empathy, but the film’s tight 90-minute runtime doesn’t give them the space they deserve. Despite its ambition and moments of genuine tension, the trailer completely undermined my enjoyment, which inexplicably spoils the film’s major twist. Who thought that was a good idea? Keeping the reveal for the film itself would have made for a far more potent experience. In the end, Companion is an entertaining but frustrating watch, not a failure of technology or storytelling, but of poor marketing and bad decisions, made by humans.
