Plot summary

Filmed entirely inside the world of virtual reality (VR), this immersive and revealing documentary roots itself in several unique communities within VR Chat, a burgeoning virtual reality platform. Through observational scenes captured in real-time, in true documentary style, the film reveals the growing power and intimacy of several relationships formed in the virtual world, many of which began during the COVID-19 lockdown, while so many in the physical world were facing intense isolation.

I never entered any Virtual Reality world as

I never entered any Virtual Reality world as I never understood the appeal of faking one's own existence. Now that I got a short glimpse of it in this flick, less than 3 minutes in total, I can understand even less why people do use this. The graphics are horrible, there are glitches all the time and the interaction is idiotic. Thus I naturally have to consider this movie a pile of crap as well. 1/10!!

a fascinating synthesis of mediums. experimentation with how films are actually made doesn’t seem to be too common, which made this automatically unique. this creative concept definitely helps counter some of the inevitable cringe and still-developing technology. i’m probably placing way more thought on the nature of reality than this film is actually pondering itself, but i give it credit for the inspiration.

What a fascinating project. We Met in VR

What a fascinating project. We Met in VR works better as a piece of history than an actual movie I think. What I mean is that it so successfully captures a niche community at a moment in time (early pandemic) that will most likely never be repeated again in our lifetime, but very often fails to be entertaining. "Filmed" entirely in the PC game VRChat, this is some of the most novel documentary film-making I've ever seen, and while this is a one of a kind piece of work, from an outsider's perspective, the only moments that really work for me are its some of its more traditional emotional scenes set to its beautifully minimalistic score. Any attempt at comedy are lost in the sheer bizarreness of the subject matter. This lack of emotional variety seemed a little reflective of the people represented who play the game as depression, malaise, and social anxiety seem to be the glue that binds many of them together. I'd be interested in the perspective of someone who uses VRChat regularly, but I think We Met in VR's biggest challenge was representing its subjects as more nuanced than the state of their mental health. I think it mostly gets there, but not all the way - especially for your average viewer who will assuredly watch this with a very skeptical eye.
