Plot summary

2 million taels in gold has been stolen from a vault within the Forbidden City. The Empress wants the money returned within 10 days. Chief Constable Leng Tian-Ying is hired to bring back the gold robbers, dead or alive- and Leng's earned a reputation of never bringing anyone back alive.

A constable who has a violent rep does

A constable who has a violent rep does what he does best hunting for those who have robbed the imperial treasury. Snicker snack! One of the darkest Shaw Brothers films (so they tell me), this film features the stylized sets and intentional martial arts expected. During the first half hour, fight scenes are too dark to see detail. The title character isn't a hero. He's an officer of the law who fulfills his duty to the extreme. Although it's not convincing the swords are cutting anyone there are spots with blood pacts on chests which spurt gloriously. Sometimes these pacts are easily seen, which I can excuse, but the one scene with an untethered horse clearly being held by a rope is inexcusable.
