Plot summary

By the mid-1980s, the fabled animation studios of Walt Disney had fallen on hard times. The artists were polarized between newcomers hungry to innovate and old timers not yet ready to relinquish control. These conditions produced a series of box-office flops and pessimistic forecasts: maybe the best days of animation were over. Maybe the public didn't care. Only a miracle or a magic spell could produce a happy ending. Waking Sleeping Beauty is no fairy tale. It's the true story of how Disney regained its magic with a staggering output of hits - "Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast ," "Aladdin," "The Lion King," and more - over a 10-year period.

While uneven and I'm not a fan of

While uneven and I'm not a fan of the decision to have the film consist entirely of archive footage with interviews bring voice-only, Waking Sleeping Beauty otherwise offers an interesting look at how Disney restored its reputation big-time in the late '80s and early '90s whilst not being afraid to discuss management woes back when Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg were still in charge without demonising them which one could understandably expect given the circumstances behind their departures. This documentary probably could've delved deeper into the Disney Renaissance instead of conveniently stopping after mentioning how big The Lion King ended up becoming whilst limiting mentions of Toy Story and Pocahontas to mere cameos as "some movie about toys being made with computers" and "the movie that Katzenberg was hoping would become their actual next magnum opus" but I think that what we got in Waking Sleeping Beauty provides enough of a satisfactory, educational experience that makes it essential viewing for Disney fans and animation enthusiasts alike.
