Plot summary

Vincent has an extraordinary ability: his strength and reflexes increase tenfold when in contact with water. To make full use of this gift, he settles in a region with many lakes and rivers, which is isolated enough to allow him to live a peaceful life. Then, one day, during an aquatic escapade, he encounters Lucie.

OMG this is one of those arthouse French

OMG this is one of those arthouse French indie message flicks. Vincent is basically like Aquaman - he gets his power from water. Except he is a homeless scrawny Frenchman. I don't even think he can breath underwater, but if he takes a shower he can punch through concrete walls. Anyway, he falls in love, gets in trouble, has to run from the law, and (SPOILERS) in leaving his love, finds that he is vulnerable without his scales... get it? Get it? It is SOOOO stupid. Also the director doesn't like dialogue or continuous shots. There are maybe 200 words in the whole film, and the whole thing is shot as a series of 30 second takes with no transitions. Mercifully, this thing is just over 1 hour. On the up side, there are pretty scenes of southern France.

Vincent Has No Scales is an absolutely marvelous

Vincent Has No Scales is an absolutely marvelous and fascinating examination of the dilemma of an ordinary man with an extraordinary gift. The movie develops Vincent's character enough for intelligent viewers to understand him and his nomadic lifestyle and to care about him. I wanted to follow along with him on his journey to see where it led him, and the movie kept me engaged the entire time. Kudos to Thomas Salvador for honing both the acting skills and the athleticism to pull off a subtle, convincing performance. I would love to have learned more about his girlfriend Lucie and friend/co-worker Driss, but sometimes small films are financially limited in their exploration or maybe it was a creative decision. The movie showcases the breathtaking landscapes of Verdon Gorge. I'm discriminant in who I'd recommend this movie to. There is no arch enemy who is conspiring to take over or destroy the world, trying to absorb superpowers to terrorize the masses, or plotting to kill any superheroes. There is no space travel, no laser rays, explosions, or elaborate fight scenes. This movie is a quiet, intriguing examination of a person with an unusual gift that is well worth checking out especially if you appreciate small independent films.
