More of a drama than a thriller, but still an okay movie...

I had never even heard about this 2026 thriller titled "Unrequited" prior to getting the chance to sit down and watch it. And with it being a movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I had to check it out. I can't claim that I harbored a whole lot of expectations to the movie, as it was a Tubi thriller.Writer Chris Stokes, whom also directed the movie, penned down a rather enjoyable script. And I do believe, that "Unrequited" was actually the best of movies from Chris Stokes that I have sat through. So thumbs up for that accomplishment. However, I have to say that the movie was not really much of a thriller, it was more of a drama, with very, very light thriller elements thrown into the recipe. You have to sit through more than 60 minutes of the movie before the elements of being a thriller started to pop up, and then it was a too little, too late.I was not familiar with a single actress or actors on the cast list. Not that it was a hindrance to the movie, quite the opposite actually, as I do enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen. The acting performances in "Unrequited" were good.For a Tubi movie, then I will say that "Unrequited" was a nice surprise. It is a movie that is worth watching, provided you sit down to watch a drama, and not a diehard thriller.My rating of writer and director Chris Stokes's 2026 movie lands on a five out of ten stars.

This is seriously tragic

Unrequited is the kind of film that feels unstable from its very first scene, as if the foundation was never fully secured before production began. What unfolds is not a slow burn or an experimental narrative, but a disjointed story that struggles to define its tone, purpose, or emotional trajectory. The premise may have had potential on paper, yet the execution never allows that potential to surface in a meaningful way.The screenplay is where the cracks show most clearly. Rather than building a structured arc with rising tension and clear stakes, the film drifts from moment to moment without momentum. Scenes feel loosely connected, almost episodic, but without the cohesion or thematic throughline needed to justify that structure. The beginning does little to ground the audience, the middle meanders without escalation, and the conclusion arrives without emotional payoff. It feels less like a complete narrative and more like fragments assembled without refinement.Character development is another major weakness. Instead of gradually revealing motivations, flaws, and growth, the film introduces characters in a rushed manner and then fails to deepen them. Their decisions often feel unearned, and emotional beats lack impact because the groundwork has not been properly laid. As a result, it becomes difficult to form any meaningful attachment to what unfolds onscreen.The casting also feels mismatched. Performances vary in tone and intensity, creating a lack of cohesion across the ensemble. Some actors appear to be working within a melodrama, while others seem to be in a subdued character study. That inconsistency further contributes to the sense that the film cannot decide what it wants to be.Technically, the production does little to compensate for these narrative issues. Direction lacks clarity, and pacing suffers from abrupt transitions that disrupt immersion. Moments that should carry weight pass by without resonance, leaving the overall experience flat and frustrating.Ultimately, Unrequited feels like a project that needed more development before reaching audiences. Its ambition to tell an emotionally charged story is evident, but ambition alone cannot sustain a film without structure, cohesion, and character depth. What remains is a messy, unfocused experience that struggles to justify its existence, making it difficult to recommend.
