Plot summary

When their regal matriarch falls ill, the troubled Vuillard family come together for a hesitant Christmastime reunion. Among them is rebellious ne'er-do-well Henri and the uptight Elizabeth. Together under the same roof for the first time in many years, their intricate, long denied resentments and yearnings emerge again.

Runs out of steam after about 80 or 90 minutes but it's an involving enough black comedy with a very dysfunctional family at the center.

As a big fan of The Family Stone

As a big fan of The Family Stone (2005) it wasn't long before I caught the parallels. But this is France, land of existentialism and comfortable with tragedy, so the sugar coating literally none of us experience in real life, is also here entirely absent. It's the difference between a cold glass of dry white wine and a coke. I have room in my life for both, but give me a choice and the wine will win. The family of characters are riveting and performed by some of the greatest of film actors, Deneuve and Mathieu Almaric amongst them. I laughed and I certainly cried, and I gasped - and this was the third time watched.

Too Long and Overrated (12,406–22 Apr 2026) In Roubaix, Junon Vuillard learns that he needs a marrow transplant, and her husband Abel joins his dysfunctional family for Christmas to know whether any member is compatible with Junon. Their daughter Elizabeth arrives with her husband Claude Dédalus and their son Paul, who has mental problems. Ivan with his wife Sylvia and their two sons. Henri, who was banished from the family by Elizabeth six years ago when she paid his debts, is invited by Paul and arrives with his girlfriend Faunia. And their cousin Simon, who is single. The family learns that Henri and Paul are compatible with Junon in the middle of arguments, fights, offenses and secrets. "Un conte de Noël", a.k.a. "A Christmas Tale" (2008), is a French drama with dark humor along the Christmas. This film is too long and overrated, but the amazing cast make it worthwhile watching for fans of the French cinema. My vote is six. Title (Brazil): "Um Conto de Natal" ("A Christmas Tale")
