To step into the “sacred ground” of the

To step into the “sacred ground” of the two Bobs — a realm no one else had ever accessed — was already unimaginable. But that access came from an unexpected person: their "daughter". And not just any daughter, but one who had become a documentary filmmaker! It felt nothing short of divine intervention. Through their extraordinary relationship, this film also reveals the value and profound meaning of Robert Caro’s work. That, too, is one of its many charms. I couldn’t take my eyes off the deeply layered and complex connection between the two men. Layer upon layer, their bond unfolds in ways that are intimate, mysterious, and ultimately unforgettable.

Oh boy, this movie really made me want

Oh boy, this movie really made me want to read The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert Caro. The documentary is about that author and his editor for many, many decades, Robert Gottlieb. It’s also about publishing, writing, editing, and the republic of letters. The film has background on its two subjects, and explores their work both together and separately. It’s just a great film about book people. Caro is famous for his thorough histories about power and the film has some really great insight into his working methods. Gottlieb is a storied editor who has edited tons of great books and writers and the film really captures his eccentric, bookish personality well (his daughter directed the film). This movie is about people by way of books and it is such a wonderful celebration of the written word that it may be one of the greatest films about books ever made.
