Story line seemed interesting, but the dull setting

Story line seemed interesting, but the dull setting and lack of chemistry and believability of the characters made this movie feel longer than it was. Didn't make sense for her character to fall for the painter, when her husband was so sweet-- when seeing "his" baby that he thinks is his, for the first time, the reaction was heartwarming. Why would she run off with a painter? More of a love story drama than a historical fiction.

A pretty good movie actually. Beautiful Alicia Vikander is worth the price of admission. And doubly so for her nude love-making scenes. The production values are top-notch. The story is interesting, delving into a chapter of history that is largely forgotten, but more interesting because of the twists and turns of the love-quadrangle involving the main characters. Unfortunately, the story alternates between hard to believe and hard to follow. What I did not expect were the flashes of humor, which brought to mind "Shakespeare in Love." (The late great Tom Stoppard had a hand in writing both.) While some of the hate directed at this movie may be related to the slightly garbled and less than fully satisfying story, some also is probably related to puritan-minded viewers discomfort with the theme of adultery, and the fact that Harvey Weinstein was one of the producers. It is unfortunate that many people will miss this well made and interesting movie.

I’m grateful I don’t always rely on the opinions of others and their reviews. I relish when I find them wrong. Some people don’t appreciate a gift when they see one. In a world of dystopian and apocalyptically depressing films these days it’s refreshing to be transported back in time when the most scandalous thing happening is the tulip trade (and the scandals of love behind the scenes in parallel). This alone fascinated me. Sometimes this film is like a Dutch painting come to life. Purchased, forced love competes with natural real love. You think you know the ending (and the turbulence that Christopher Waltz is capable of), or do you? This was well worth my time.
