Plot summary

A group of scientists is sent to the planet Arkanar to help the local civilization, which is in the Medieval phase of its own history, to find the right path to progress. Their task is a difficult one: they cannot interfere violently and in no case can they kill. The scientist Rumata tries to save the local intellectuals from their punishment and cannot avoid taking a position.

A film that has haunted me ever since

A film that has haunted me ever since I first saw it about ten years ago. Watching it feels like stepping into a world that is wet, foul, ugly, and utterly devoid of hope—you can almost smell it through the screen. It's a visceral experience, not just visually but physically oppressive. What stays with you isn’t just the grime or the chaos, but the way the film strips death of all its ceremonial veils. There's no dignity, no peace—just raw, brutal decay. It's an unrelenting vision of humanity at its most feral, and a powerful meditation on how little separates so-called civilization from absolute barbarism. Not for the faint of heart, but absolutely unforgettable.

A snail on valium has more dramatic flow than this... I sat through the first hour of this 3-hour-long slog through a world depicted as cesspool in every way, but could endure no more. Let me be clear: with regard to Russian epics, Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublov" is a world masterpiece [5/5 stars]; the critics who hail "Hard to Be a God" as on the same level or (God help us) higher, are completely deluded. If you're looking to invest some empathy in characters with a dramatic arc, you've come to the wrong place... but if the repetitive, long, and supremely boring depiction of putrid stench and brutality is your thing, then hold your nose and dive in... [the stars are for the incredible production values of the film's world].
