Plot summary

The Voice of the Martyrs presents the inspiring new movie Tortured for Christ, a cinematic retelling of the testimony of VOM founder Pastor Richard Wurmbrand as written in his international bestseller Tortured for Christ. This movie was produced to honor the 50th anniversary of the book’s 1967 release. Filmed entirely in Romania, including in the very prison where Pastor Wurmbrand endured torture and solitary confinement, this powerful film uniquely presents the story with live action rather than interviews. The dialogue is presented in English, Romanian and Russian (with English subtitles) to hold to the authenticity of this true story.

This is a marvelous movie on a number

This is a marvelous movie on a number of levels. The acting is good. The production values are quite good as well. It also is historically accurate and gives us a good picture of life behind the Iron Curtain after Communists seized power following World War II. It shows the extreme measures totalitarians will take to maintain their power and the way they will try to suppress believers in anything or anyone other than the total authority of their oppressors. The actor who plays Richard Wurmbrand (Emil Mandanac) does a supeb job as does his wife, Sabina (Raluca Botez). The narration is in English (at least in America), I assume in different languages elsewhere, but the dialogue is in Romanian with sub-titles. Because of some of the torture scenes, it is not a film for the faint hearted. But it deals with a topic that still needs to be addressed today. The Soviet Union and many of it's satellites have fallen as has the Iron Curtain, but hatred for those who believe in Jesus Christ and His bride, the church, have not vanished even in the "free world," we need to heed the many lessons Pastor Wurmbrand and others like him would teach us. Our children who are old enough need to see this.

Excellent, but Reformed (Lutheran & Calvinist).

A movie difficult to watch. Difficult in the sense of hard to swallow amid the cruelties. But truly inspirational - obviously not in the sense to repeat such a tragic story, but to be steadfast in the ordinary life of a Christian and the small things of life.

It is also refreshing to read through the book of the same name a story which is not saturated with half-lies or made-up anecdotes.

It would be an excellent movie if the producer would not have partly ruined it, by inserting at the end music from Calvinists (The Gettys) and composing the hall-of-fame of martyrs almost exclusively of Orthodox monks and priests. When it comes to sufferings for CHRIST, we should focus on CHRIST and not on divisions / denominations.

Quote of the movie: "There are two kinds of Christians: Those who sincerely believe in God and those that, just as sincerely, believe that they believe in God."
