The 1992 American animated musical comedy Tom and

The 1992 American animated musical comedy Tom and Jerry: The Movie holds a unique, yet polarizing, position in the history of cinema and within the expansive hypothetical cosmology of the Americaverse franchise. Serving as a feature-length adaptation of the beloved, silent Hanna-Barbera characters created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the film represented the culmination of numerous development attempts stretching back to the 1970s, including previously abandoned concepts involving animation legend Chuck Jones and even a proposed live-action version intended to star Dustin Hoffman and Chevy Chase. Furthermore, recognizing the burgeoning success of the Disney Renaissance, the creators ambitiously turned the film into a musical, hiring the celebrated, Oscar-winning composition duo of Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse, who crafted a melodic structure reminiscent of classic MGM musicals such as The Wizard of Oz.

Tom & Jerry: The Movie podría haber sido

Loved as a kid, but in hindsight this

Loved as a kid, but in hindsight this is just sad. It's well animated; the voice cast is good, Dana Hill and Richard Kind are exactly how I expected Tom and Jerry to sound, and the instrumental score is lovely. I'll even go so far as to say that Tom and Jerry talking and working together could have worked since both had happened many times before in the original cartoons. But none of it was executed well. If Tom and Jerry are going to speak, then give them something funny to say; if they have to work together, make it begrudgingly, and make sure they remain the actual focus in their own movie.
