Plot summary

A businessman, Tsuda, runs into a childhood friend, Kojima, on the subway. Kojima is working as a semiprofessional boxer. Tsuda soon begins to suspect that Kojima might be having an affair with his fiancée Hizuru. After an altercation, Tsuda begins training rigorously himself, leading to an extremely bloody, violent confrontation.

A ferocious, body-shattering descent into obsession, masculinity and self-destruction, Tokyo Fist is not a horror film, but it's clear it was made by a horror director, channelling the same anarchic energy into flesh rather than metal. Tsukamoto's Tokyo is an oppressive, almost predatory place. The heat is unbearable. The noise is a ceaseless drone. The surroundings are horrendously claustrophobic. A suffocating maze of pure rentlessness. Boxing here is not a sport but ritualised self-harm, a grotesque language through which the characters attempt to assert existence. Fists collide, bones break, and identities erode, replaced by a desperate need to feel something, anything, through pain. Abrasive, nihilistic, and often repellent, yet it is also hypnotic in its commitment to extremity. In creating something equal parts horrifying and hilarious, by the end, Tokyo Fist leaves you bruised, battered and oddly exhilarated, punching until nothing false remains standing.
