Audie Murphy plays himself in the movie.

Audie Murphy. The son of poor Texas sharecroppers, Murphy began his service as an army private. He quickly rose to staff sergeant and then was given a “battlefield” commission to 2nd Lieutenant. He was wounded three times, fought in nine major campaigns across the European Theater and rose to national prominence when he became the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II. He won 33 awards and ribbons, including every decoration for valor that existed then, some of them more than once, including five decorations by France and Belgium. He received the military’s highest award for bravery, the Medal of Honor, for actions in which he was credited with killing over 240 of the enemy while wounding and capturing many others. At the end of the war, at the ripe old age of 21, he left the army.
