Plot summary

Lt. Franta Slama is a top pilot in the Czech Air Force who is assigned to train a promising young flier, Karel Vojtisek, and they soon become friends. When Nazi Germany invades Czechoslovakia in 1939, they both reject the authority of their new leaders and escape to England where they join other Czech exiles in the RAF. While flying a mission over England, Karel crash lands and happens upon the farmhouse of Susan, a young woman whose husband is in the Navy. Karel soon falls head over heels for Susan but, while they enjoy a brief fling, in time Susan decides she prefers the company of the older and more worldly Franta. As Franta and Karel struggle to maintain their friendship despite their romantic rivalry.

I can honestly say Dark Blue World is

I can honestly say Dark Blue World is the most beautiful and deeply emotional film. Even after 5 months, every time I think about it — I still feel sad and depressed. This movie literally stays with you.

A remarkable film, well-acted, which begs an answer to why these Czechoslovak pilots who had fought on the Allies' side in WWII were persecuted when returning to their homeland.

Told with the nostalgic sentiment of classic Hollywood

Told with the nostalgic sentiment of classic Hollywood, Dark Blue World is a surprisingly elaborate epic blending camaraderie and romance in what I can only describe as the Czech Republic's Pearl Harbour. If there's one war movie from which you don't want to take inspiration... it's that one, granted Dark Blue World is nowhere near as close to the circle jerk that Bay's Harbour is, but it still spends too much time on a trite love triangle. Thankfully, the film remains fantastically directed realising the World War II backdrop to great effect while the acting is solid all around (a particular stand out being the always great Charles Dance) giving the often-overlooked efforts of the Czech RAF pilots the centre-stage for once. The film manages to blend a multitude of efforts in order to bring to life its incredible aviation sequences, incorporating footage from both Battle of Britain and Memphis Belle, augmented by the occasional CGI, although what it ultimately amounts to is an extremely capable but uninspired yarn. There's no flag-waving with Dark Blue World, just solid writing, warm photography and endearing performances that almost hit the mark creating a world that is truly bittersweet and forging a victory that feels genuinely hard won.
