I really enjoyed the movie, but the subtitles are quite deceiving. Is not that they are wrong, but they never tell you when they jump from Cantonese to Mandarin Chinese, which is very often and is related to the themes of the film. Thankfully I watched this with my Chinese girlfriend and she told me every time they switched languages. If it wasn't for here I would have lost lots of the social commentary about immigration and identity that the film is also trying to convey, which is very interesting, but I suspect most viewers from this site just didn't get, sadly. It's a major theme in the film so is not a little detail. The reason why the two protagonists start to hang out together in the beginning is that Qiao was the only one who could understand Xiaojun's Mandarin. Many viewers are gonna lose these details because the subtitles make no effort in explaining these changes of language.
