Plot summary

Nerdy high schooler Jerry Mitchell is assigned to write an article for the school paper about the infamous new delinquent transfer student, Buddy Revell. When Jerry accidentally invades Buddy's personal space and touches him, Buddy challenges Jerry to an afterschool fight in the parking lot, which Jerry tries to avoid at all costs.

I am probably running against the mainstream here

I am probably running against the mainstream here, but I think this is an excellent film. I agree that the protagonist, Buddy Revell, is under developed, as so many protagonists are. Think of Tom Cruise in most of his blockbusters. I would like to rewrite the ending of this film – if you watch carefully at the end, there is a tiny, tiny smile from Buddy Revell. That would've been an excellent point to say something like, "Well, perhaps we could be friends, in time". The character Buddy Revell is simply a collection of prejudices – but we got a glimpse that he might be a lot smarter than what the school yard gossip suggests – and had the ending been played a fraction beyond that simple fight, the film could've been made hugely more interesting.

At the time we watched this movie, my

At the time we watched this movie, my son was in a play based on four 80s movies, and one of them was “Three O’Clock High.” He wanted to see the source material, so we rented this one. I’m not sure why it doesn’t get the acclaim that other high-school movies from the 80s do. It’s always been a favorite of mine. Richard Tyson is perfect as Buddy Revell, and Casey Siemaszko plays a believable Everyman who eventually has to stand up for himself. The film does a great job at building tension as you see Siemaszko's "Jerry Mitchell" character nervously find ways around confronting Revell throughout the day until he's forced to face his ultimate fate. It's definitely darker than most films from this era; perhaps that's why it doesn't get mentioned as much as other teen-based 80s movies. If that's the case, it's a shame because there's actually more realism in this film than many of the more popular movies that came from this decade.
