this is based on a play but the play is based on an actual event that is pretty close in the main points to this story. In early 1900s Britain this boys whole future was at stake over this accusation of a minor theft. Career university, and in the class system of the day ability to marry within his class and social acceptance. His family too faced great disgrace. It's difficult for us today to comprehend the stakes.
