I enjoyed this movie as one made in

I enjoyed this movie as one made in the era of the 1970s. It's the same way I watch movies from any era, taking in to account the norms of the time. Jack Lemmon is always good. The child actors were great, as well as Barbara Harris.

The past is a foreign country, or so

The past is a foreign country, or so they say... And you definitely need to get all your shots and pack a cultural mosquito net to handle this film... But underneath a lot of out-culture, misogyny, and generally not super-modern takes on vulnerability and the human condition... This movie stands up, is genuinely emotional and genuinely funny. For all the absurdity of character, they nevertheless feel like real people, and I found myself rooting for almost all of them by the end. Honestly, watching movies like this makes it clear that by invoking a diversity and equality litmus test, and holding everyone to it strictly... Well, we lose a lot of well-meaning shades of grey, and room to be forgiven our mistakes. Would I rather live in the world of this movie than the one I inhabit? Not at those 1972 gas prices! But... Maybe I'd rather hang out on any given night with a curmudgeonly Jack Lemmon than a virtuous Stephen Colbert?
