Plot summary

Scotland, 11th century. Driven by the twisted prophecy of three witches and the ruthless ambition of his wife, warlord Macbeth, bold and brave, but also weak and hesitant, betrays his good king and his brothers in arms and sinks into the bloody mud of a path with no return, sown with crime and suspicion.

Macbeth, sorry, The Scottish Play, might be one

Macbeth, sorry, The Scottish Play, might be one of Shakespeares’s most famous works but I’d never seen any rendition of it before watching Polanski’s 71 version. Funded partly by Playboy magazine, something very evident in several scenes, it felt far more accessible than other Shakey adaptations I’ve seen, since the dialogue isn’t so rapid fire, and plenty of moments are allowed to pay out in silence. It’s a shame we have to hear Macbeth’s every single thought, be they spoken aloud or narrated, sometimes both in the same scene, but the film does a great job of getting us into his headspace, showing how he rationalises his decisions and where his fear and paranoia stem from. It’s nowhere near as violent as some would have you believe, and a story like this necessitates a fair amount of bloodshed anyway. It might not be the most acclaimed adaptation of The Bards work, but its one of the easiest to get invested in.
