Plot summary

During World War 2 the Germans arrested people at random off the streets of Paris and in retaliation to sabotage by the resistance announced the execution of one in ten prisoners. Chosen as one of the victims, lawyer Chavel trades his place with another man in return for all his possessions. At the end of the war he returns to his house and tries to integrate himself with the family of the man who traded places with him, all the while hiding his true identity. However matters are complicated when a stranger arrives claiming to be Chavel.

We are in occupied France in 1941, where everybody speaks English, although the newspapers are still printed in French. Hopkins plays a clueless lawyer, arrested by the Germans, who is trying to argue with them. In prison all detainees keep their personal possessions, including their watches. Greene is one of my favorite authors, but I don’t remember if the book contained these elements. The movie is not worth my time.

A rich man sells his riches and in

A rich man sells his riches and in some cases his soul to a young man to escape the firing squad in world war 2 and when the rich man survives he must live with the guilt of the young man family inheriting his old home and must come to find redemption for the suffering he has caused by surviving his death.

Anthony Hopkins as the lead? Count me in

Anthony Hopkins as the lead? Count me in! He never disappoints, and this movie is no exception. Outstanding acting, a compelling storyline, and unexpected twists keep you hooked from start to finish. Truly fantastic- I would watch it again and highly recommend it.
