Plot summary

The Survivors is one of those early-80s comedies

The Survivors is one of those early-80s comedies that could have been sharper, funnier, and more memorable—especially with a cast boasting Walter Matthau, Robin Williams, and Jerry Reed. The premise has potential, but the execution wavers between mildly amusing and forgettable. Robin Williams, still early in his film career, brings that frenetic, off-the-rails energy he was becoming known for—sometimes hitting the mark, sometimes feeling like it’s the only thing keeping the movie awake. Walter Matthau does his usual grumpy-realist shtick well enough, though it often seems like he’s simply clocking in rather than truly leaning into the comedy. Jerry Reed, reliable as always, adds a little personality to the mix, but even he can’t completely rescue the film from its uneven tone and uncertain direction. In the end, The Survivors lands as a passable, occasionally funny buddy comedy that never fully takes advantage of its talented cast. Worth a watch for big Robin Williams fans and those nostalgic for 80s eccentricity, but far from essential viewing.
