Plot summary
From New York City to the farmlands of the Midwest, there are 50,000 Chinese restaurants in the U.S., yet one dish in particular has conquered the American culinary landscape with a force befitting its military moniker—“General Tso’s Chicken.” But who was General Tso and how did this dish become so ubiquitous? Ian Cheney’s delightfully insightful documentary charts the history of Chinese Americans through the surprising origins of this sticky, sweet, just-spicy-enough dish that we’ve adopted as our own.

@TamTak you are correct about the SS chicken. According to wiki: General Tso's chicken is a dish made of lightly battered pieces of dark chicken fried in a chili-accented sweet-and-sour sauce. I thin it is the chili, however, that makes it a step up over SSC
@TamTak is more like Hot and Sweet Chicken. many Chinese restaurants f it up. I have only been to one or two that actually make it good. The rest are just dry with nothing on it. Some make it like crunchy chicken with as you say sweet and sour sauce. Horrible. Chinese chef/owner named Charlie always had it on his buffet and I always ate that. RIP Charlie.
*shrugs* Just sounds like Sweet and Sour Chicken to me. Chinese migrants introduced it to Australia back in the 1800's so I doubt the claims of American origin :P
The only problem with this doco was that I felt hungry 30 mins after watching it

Try the same dish with shrimp instead of chicken. Also delicious.
