Plot summary

A German spy is passing on information about the location of Allied ships in the neutral harbor of Goa, India, with catastrophic results. Unable to undertake a full military operation in the Portuguese stronghold, English intelligence brings out of retirement a crew of geriatric ex-soldiers, veterans from World War I, using their age as cover. These old soldiers are asked to take to the seas and pull off an unlikely undercover mission.

Old men get to go on one more

Old men get to go on one more mission. It's fairly slow, but the cast are quite charming to watch again. Gregory Peck makes for a cool and steadfast spy leader. Roger Moore steals the movie as he's basically still James Bond here. He's practically in a Bond film all his own as he flirts with the German spy lady Barbara Kellerman and shoots down German agents. David Niven is his usual fastidious and nervous self. It's otherwise unremarkable as a war film. The espionage, spying, listening in, and secretive mission aspects are better than any of the war segments. If you watch this as an off-brand James Bond movie with Roger Moore, then it is certainly entertaining.

I rewatched this story of one of the most unlikely episodes of WWII aftresh. It does capture a moment in time and may not play that well at a time when as a society we are coming to terms with our colonial past. However, the story is engaging and boasts an impressive ensemble cast. However, it was the location shots I enjoyed the most which wouldn't be possible today and would need to be mocked with CGI.
