Plot summary

As the Second World War breaks out, German freighter captain Karl Ehrlich is about to leave Sydney, Australia with his vessel, the Ergenstrasse. Ehrlich, an anti-Nazi but proud German, hopes to outrun or out-maneuver the British warship pursuing him. Aboard his vessel is Elsa Keller, a woman Ehrlich has been ordered to return to Germany safely along with whatever secrets she carries. When Ehrlich's fiercely Nazi chief officer Kirchner commits an atrocity, the British pursuit becomes deadly.

A Hollywood potboiler at sea. The Duke is

A Hollywood potboiler at sea. The Duke is a Deutschlander but he doesn't care for the Little Austrian Corporal. Miss Turner is..well, simply scrumptious whether she's wrapped in mink or denim and sailcloth. Part chase, part romance. All the usual shipboard plot elements thrown in but well done for the Fifties. You'll see some familiar faces including Claude Akins and the SS Minnow's Skipper, Alan Hale, Jr, is aboard, too. Worth a watch if you have a couple of hours to fill.

Is this supposed to be a war movie

Is this supposed to be a war movie or a romance tale? Why is John Wayne playing a German freight captain with an American drawl? The film is suffering from a mild identity crisis, and my concerns about it are not addressed.
