Plot summary

Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper, was gang raped by six white boys in 1944 Alabama. Common in Jim Crow South, few women spoke up in fear for their lives. Not Recy Taylor, who bravely identified her rapists. The NAACP sent its chief rape investigator Rosa Parks, who rallied support and triggered an unprecedented outcry for justice. The film exposes a legacy of physical abuse of black women and reveals Rosa Parks’ intimate role in Recy Taylor’s story.

Recy Taylor deserves better. This meandering, unfocused mess

Recy Taylor deserves better. This meandering, unfocused mess of a film seems like a white supremacist telling of the story, right down to the protection of the perpetrators. The documentarian never shows us their faces as though she's protecting them all these years later. This was the wrong person to make this film. Please someone do this the right way, for Recy Taylor's sake.

Great documentary!!! So glad Ms. Taylor was able to speak about the incident before her death!!!! I also hate that the “scholar” who spoke in the film pronounced Ms. Taylor’s first name wrong several times!!! I don’t understand why the filmmakers or editors didn’t catch that at all!!!

Part Civil Rights story, and part a voice

Part Civil Rights story, and part a voice for all the woman who have been sexually assaulted and not believed or taken seriously, 'The Rape of Recy Taylor' is a tribute to the title character and many many many women (and a few men) who needed to have their voices heard when it mattered. Interwoven with tidbits on other civil rights leaders, the film doesn't dive into the Recy Taylor story as much as it could and that takes away from the power of the film albeit just a touch. Documentarian Nancy Buirski put forth an important film, but one that couldn't always stay on track. A tough and necessary watch. We need to respect all people and this should never be debated. Final Score: 7.1/10
