This is both a weak sequel, but with a story hook to the first movie, as well as a simple retelling of the first movie. All this movie does is move the exact plot beats forward in time and updates the characters slightly. The late 90s were strange when you look at the culture. The rampant misogyny, fat shaming, conformist views were both accepted and also to be challenged in movies like this. It's shot in a very particular way that dates it incredibly hard and while the actors are doing the best they can with the material they were given it's simply a matter of the spirit of the age exacting its tribute and making this a far less interesting a movie than it could have been if it was made before or after. We already know what a good version of this movie is because it has already been done. It is its prequel. This version isn't bad but it certainly cannot live up to those high expectations.

Why did this get greenlit?! Originally this was supposed to be an unrelated film called "the curse," but United Artists forced rewrites so it would connect with the original Carrie. The story is lazy, the main character is so forgettable and it’s just another typical cash grab sequel that aims to ruin the legacy of Stephen King’s stories (there were many of them back in the 90s like the sequels to Children of the Corn and Lawnmower Man.) The only thing that stopped this movie for being one of the worst films ever made is because Amy Irving’s acting as Sue Snell as her acting was tolerable compared to everybody else in the film. It feels like American Psycho 2's production history.

It tosses in some fresh moments, but mostly it’s just a ’90s remix no one really wanted.
