Plot summary

Cynical British journalist Fowler falls in love with a young Vietnamese woman but is dismayed when a naïve U.S. official also begins vying for her attention. In retaliation, Fowler informs the communists that the American is selling arms to their enemy.

The scenic setting (in black and white) was

The scenic setting (in black and white) was the best thing about this film, and it was worth watching for that. But it was short on plot. The characters had no depth whatsoever, and you get very little sense of the differing philosophies of the two main characters in order to understand how -- and why -- they might oppose each other beyond the fact that they are both in love with the same woman. I would guess that the book lays this all out a lot more thoroughly. I plan to read it soon, and that's the reason I opted to watch the film. There's a 2002 remake of the film which I want to see, as well, before I read the novel. I'm hoping it's a stronger film than this 1958 version.

Wordy. If only Audie Murphy had been allowed

Wordy. If only Audie Murphy had been allowed to be actually romantic! No-one in this film shows any genuine feelings of affection. Make that, any genuine feelings full-stop!

An "American slant" on the French colonial occupation

An "American slant" on the French colonial occupation. Read the book instead. Audie Murphy isn't a very good actor. Redgrave is wonderful.
