Plot summary

During the Napoleonic Wars, when the French have occupied Spain, some Spanish guerrilla soldiers are going to move a big cannon across Spain in order to help the British defeat the French. A British officer is there to accompany the Spanish and along the way, he falls in love with the leader's girl.

I saw this movie as a child, loved

I saw this movie as a child, loved it! Saw it again tonight and I still love the crazy patriotism of the Spaniards and the teamwork with the English to overcome the imperial aspirations of the French. It's beautiful! Vive l'independance! Boom boom!

For being a big production movie it was

For being a big production movie it was not very good, taking forever to plod through the countryside to a conclusion. As far as acting goes, all three stars were miscast. When Sinatra first appeared in his character I laughed. Somewhere after the first half the plot became silly.

Could be one of the silliest movies I've

Could be one of the silliest movies I've ever seen. Sinatra leads a resistance "that never retreats", but they don't have any guns. Well, I guess they acquired a few muskets here and there. Peck, a high ranking officer, arrives to help, but he has no aides, entourage or troops, its just him. A regiment of French infantry could've driven off this rabble at their leisure and captured the gun, but apparently nobody thought of this idea. But the cast is great, the acting very good and the cinematography is breathtaking. If nothing else, this movie showcases just how good an actor Frank Sinatra was, and you really can't go wrong with Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren
