Plot summary

Greed, corruption, ignorance, and disease. Midsummer, 1349: the Black Death reaches northern Germany. Minstrels go to Hamelin for the Mayor's daughter's wedding to the Baron's son. He wants her dowry to pay his army while his father taxes the people to build a cathedral he thinks will save his soul. A local apothecary who's a Jew seeks a treatment for the plague; the priests charge him with witchcraft. One of the minstrels, who has soothed the Mayor's daughter with his music, promises to rid the town of rats for the fee. The Mayor agrees, then renigs. In the morning, the plague, the Jew's trial, and the Piper's revenge come at once.

I uh wasn't expecting this to be so

I uh wasn't expecting this to be so straight forwardly bland. It's literally just the like most text book version of this story with absolutely zero personality, take, additions... like cmon, spice this shit up Demy, I know you have it in you. Yeah sure it's a darker take than say like your average children's book but nothing you wouldn't expect. I mean, not gonna lie, Donovan is literally the ideal guy to cast as the pied piper. Maybe that's the whole premise?? Like, a "this just needs to exist" kinda thing. "Lookat this fuckin guy, we can't NOT make him the pied piper I mean," "Okay okay, lets just build the damn set, wrangle a buncha rats and children and be done with it."

Playing like a strange hybrid of Ken Russell's

Playing like a strange hybrid of Ken Russell's The Devils and Terry Gilliam's Jabberwocky, this humourless Jacques Demy oddity has a strong cast (bar the dreadful blank that is Donovan) and a fondness for ridiculous hats. Its biggest problem is a lack of narrative propulsion: until the last fifteen minutes almost nothing happens - just Michael Hordern in a bad wig failing to come up with a potion; Jack Wild hobbling on a stick; and Roy Kinnear, Donald Pleasence, Peter Vaughan and John Hurt waiting for their paycheck.

Nach PEAU D'ANE ein weiterer Märchenfilm von Jacques Demy, der stilistisch nach den Exzessen der Perrault-Adaption schon beinahe naturalistisch daherkommt. Demy ist hier offensichtlich vor allem an einem dà 1/4ster-schmutzigen Portrait einer von der Gier des eines sich ankà 1/4ndigen Kapitalismus und der Grausamkeit des Klerus und der Inquisition gezeichneten mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft interessiert, und setzt den Hippie-Barden Donovan vermutlich sehr bewusst als Fremdkörper in diese finstere Welt hinein. Ob das Versprechen des Blumenkindertums nun als ein utopischer Lichtblick funktionieren soll, oder doch - wie das vom Papagei nachgekrächzte Liebeslied von Catherine Deneuve in PEAU D'ANE - als naive Träumerei demaskiert wird, das bleibt jedenfalls am Ende relativ offen.
