Plot summary

Melbourne, 1886. Two gentlemen climb into a hansom cab late one murky night. One man climbs out, the other travels on to St Kilda. On arrival, the driver finds the second man dead; murdered. The ‘high-society’ killing sends shockwaves through the young city, still flush from its gold-rush boom.

Excellent adaption of the first ever detective novel

Excellent adaption of the first ever detective novel. It bought the Melbourne of the 1880s alive.

Great sets, costumes and makeup. And the acting on average was fairly good. What I did find very distracting was the camera work. It kept pulling me out of the fantasy. The shots bounced around like a commercial, rapidly changing angles for no good reason.

These are good actors and yet most of the performances in this movie aren't good - very stagey and overdone. Possibly this is the fault of the dreadful script which is cliched and stilted. Another irritating feature is that the camera is all over the place. Hand held? It's like it's been shot on a phone video. Really, don't bother with this one.
