Seemingly followed the trend of martial arts integration

Seemingly followed the trend of martial arts integration to garner millennial interest towards the classic tale of swordsmanship only to find it both child's play and live action role playing (Did it originated there?) by generic characterization as the production merits blandly weren't up to cinematic standards albeit how the climax was staged and not without wit, both decently at a minimum. (C)

The Musketeer has the makings of a decent

The Musketeer has the makings of a decent film. The Hong Kong-style action sequences help this film stand out, there is witty dialogue and the production design & costumes are solid. Yet, there's something about the film that feels off. Maybe it's D'Artagnan not being the most charismatic hero, perhaps his actor's performance is not that great, his lack of chemistry with Mena Suvari and I reckon that the original story being reduced to a generic revenge film which trades swashbuckling for wuxia where, as the title would suggest, the actual 3 Musketeers are left playing second-fiddle to D'Artagnan did the film no favours. I didn’t find this film to be a cringefest and I have no problems with an adaptation doing something different. After all, the 2011 film was more faithful than the steampunk elements would imply. Yet I can't help but shake the feeling that the filmmakers needed more time to cook so that this wouldn't come across as "we have the Disney version at home".

Witty dialogue, good action sequences, and a ton

Witty dialogue, good action sequences, and a ton of memorable "one-liners". It's not trying to be anything more than a European Jiang Hu flic and in that, it succeeds. It's not on the same level as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon with it's cinematography or amazing landscapes, but it's still a lot of fun.
