I was reminded quite often of “Vox Lux”

I was reminded quite often of “Vox Lux” (2018) as this docudrama shines it’s spotlight on the fickleness and traumas of the music business. Charlie XCX plays herself as a young artist walking the tightrope of her own creative ambitions and the commercial expectations of the business that is making her a wealthy woman. With one successful album already under her belt she and her small team of confidantes now find the yanks taking more of an interest thanks to Rosanna Arquette’s non-nonsense record company boss “Tammy” - and that means a documentary of her build up to a live concert. She’s unconvinced, but so long as her creative director “Celeste” (Hailey Gates) is in charge, she will indulge. Ha! No chance. They have drafted in “Johannes” (Alexander Skarsgård) to beef things up, tones things down and channel her energies into something more akin to the glowing wristband experience of a Coldplay concert. Exasperated, she takes a break in Ibiza where she makes a fairly hefty online faux-pas that leaves her entirely exposed to the more venal elements of her industry and she, quite literally, dangling from the ceiling (or hiding in an eight foot tall cigarette lighter). I reckon this is really one for her fans, of whom there are plenty. For the rest of us, though, it doesn’t ever really catch fire. Lots of expletive-ridden dialogue, chain smoking and temper tantrums later I didn’t think this told me anything about the music business that I didn’t already know. If anything what this does illustrate is that when she had complete control as an aspiring singer-songwriter, she produced something heartfelt, honest and relevant to her audience. Now that the marketeers have got their hands on her, though, things lose their edge and become more generically sterilised. Is it supposed to be a satirical critique of her life or an all too realistic one? Perhaps she ought to have waited five years or so to make this and then she could have provided some more answers. As it is, it is little better than a well produced but fairly shallow dose of self-indulgence about someone whose endurance is yet to be tested by an exceptionally volatile consumer.

So lackluster it's almost nonsensical

Oh dear Charli bb, I wanted to like this, but...it's a rough ride, or shall I say, lack thereof.I think the primary value this film will have over the years is simply that it exists at all - as an anomaly and a strange notch in the belt of the full Charli XCX legacy. Clearly her acting career is about to blossom as she has two other movies (both horror) dropping later this year (a reimagining of Faces of Death made by the duo who brought us the fantastic Netflix original movie CAM, and a new Takashi Miike movie?!), so this will always kind of exist as that bizarrely lackluster dud that kicked this chapter of her story off.I would start with the good but I'm not sure I can think of any? Perhaps the only value is getting to spend a little more time around Charli in any sense other than through music videos, etc. But, the primary issue is that you're not going to have ANY fun while doing so. I didn't expect a "good movie", but what I DID expect was fun...that's the ONE thing I expected. However, it is the most un-fun movie I have seen in a long time, and generally uninteresting. The first half of the film was empty but offered a slight bit of charm as its candidness felt close enough to an eye into Charli's reality, but then halfway through it attempts to transform into a Safdie Bros-esque anxiety-riddled drama, and sadly nothing about it hits. Charli can act just fine, and has a few strong moments in the movie, but due to jagged directing, pacing, tonal inconsistency, writing that almost entirely lacks wit, hollow characters, and a serious lack of arcs, and a pretty serious lack of plot if we're being real, this thing spirals itself right into oblivion (aka the toilet, I'm sorry).The film is almost completely devoid of humor, aside from Alex Skarsgaard's character - he really went for comedy with his performance, pretty full bore, and it really feels like he is knowingly trying to compensate for a weak script. While he is one of the most entertaining elements of the film, his character is so on-the-nose and cliche that it actually feels a bit corny in context rather than functioning as nuanced satire, as it could have done.On top of it all, when I think of Charli XCX, I think of a bratty, sassy, high-energy party girl who everyone wants to be around. I think of fun. At no point in this film does her character or the movie channel this energy in any way. It conjures the polar opposite, and keeps you in that realm the entire time. In fact, it makes Charli seem pretty boring. Like, really boring. If this was done in the name of drama, to showcase great dramatic acting, or a great dramatic script, it would make sense, but since it doesn't cater to either of those, it's just kind of an upsetting experience, kind of "killing the vibe", if anything. And, that does feel like a parallel with what the movie is trying to say, but the question is...why would anyone want to do that?I think it's really cool that Charli managed to make this thing while amidst her Brat chaos, and it's kind of wild how, if anything, the title is so perfect because it represents her taking the opportunity, or seizing "the moment", to put out an A24 movie, regardless of whether or not they had a story worth telling. It feels like they had a chance to do something, so they pulled something out of their butt, and did it. That's legitimately respectable, but the movie is BAD.

Charli XCX is a Star

I am a fan of Charli XCX and her music. Now she is starring in a new mockumentary, as a version of herself, called "The Moment". Also with Alexander Skarsgard as a film director directing her concert movie that she clashes with. And with Rosanna Arquette, and Kylie Jenner in a cameo.It is about Charli XCX preparing for her tour connected to her album "Brat". It reminded me of the HBO show "Entourage". It was also somewhat similar to the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night".Unfortunately there is very little of Charli XCX 's music in the film. What is in the film is interesting and entertaining. I cared about her character and wanted her to succeed. I thought it was a good movie.
