Plot summary

The true story of the frightening, lonely world of silence and darkness of 7-year-old Helen Keller who, since infancy, has never seen the sky, heard her mother's voice or expressed her innermost feelings. Then Annie Sullivan, a 20-year-old teacher from Boston, arrives. Having just recently regained her own sight, the no-nonsense Annie reaches out to Helen through the power of touch, the only tool they have in common, and leads her bold pupil on a miraculous journey from fear and isolation to happiness and light.

Arthur Penn's melodramatic screen version of his own

Arthur Penn's melodramatic screen version of his own Broadway production is hampered by being overpitched throughout. The original stage actors have become so used to playing to the back row that it all comes across as clunky and sentimental. It's a pity because the story it tells is potentially very affecting, as much a journey for Helen Keller's family and her damaged tutor (an over-ripe Anne Bancroft with a bad Oirish accent) as it is Patty Duke's Helen. On the plus side, Ernesto Caparros' black-and-white photography and Laurence Rosenthal's fine melancholy music help give it the layers it otherwise lacks.
