Plot summary

A Scotsman abruptly breaks off his engagement to pretty Kitty and moves to his uncle's castle in the Scottish highlands. Kitty and her aunt follow Gerald a few weeks later, and discover he has suddenly aged. Some mysterious things happen in a maze made from the hedges adjoining the castle.

Very silly but effective B-movie chiller, indifferently acted

Very silly but effective B-movie chiller, indifferently acted but wonderfully designed (by director William Cameron Menzies) and originally shot in 3D. The setting is a vast castle and maze in remote fog-bound Scotland, where a mystery resides and is being protected by American baronet - and King of the 50s Stereoscopic Creature Feature - Richard Carlson. The big reveal at the end is laugh-out-loud hilarious and worth waiting for, and Cameron Menzies conjures a great deal from shadows and candle-light. Very enjoyable.

This movie had a great energetic start and

This movie had a great energetic start and an intriguing introduction to the castle. Excellent acting, cinematography and directing made it a pleasure to watch. But boy, did the last 20 minutes tank. I was expecting this to be a lycanthropy story and the beau was infected. I wish it had gone that way but the ending unravelled in the most absurd way. It makes me wonder if there was a pay dispute near the end of shooting and the disgruntled director wreaked his revenge.

Carlson and Pate held it all together. Some good visuals and atmosphere but the story needed more work. Not an unusual type of movie for the 50's but entertaining enough.
