Plot summary

Alfred Carlton Gilbert invented the Erector Set and is trying to get it onto the toy shelves of the country. A.C. is startled to be summoned to the White House, where top officials ask him to convert the toy factory into a weapons manufacturing company for the duration of the war. "No" is really not an option, for fear of being labeled unpatriotic so the switch is made. Later, government officials ask A.C. to be their spokesman for a campaign to avoid "toy giving" for the coming holidays and buy war bonds instead. With a young son himself, who looks forward to Christmas like any other child, what will A.C. do this time?

True story of a man who saved Christmas

True story of a man who saved Christmas at a time when we needed it the most. Great acting by Jason Alexander. The movie is heartwarming, funny, and inspiring. Overlooked by many at Christmas time. Stands up to the classics.

Well worth taking the trouble to find, this

Well worth taking the trouble to find, this film entertains and educates, exemplifying the dual character of the Erector Set while relating the story of the invention and popularization of the famous toy by AC Gilbert- a Yale grad, 1908 Olympic gold pole vaulter, magician, and visionary. The context of WW I wartime challenges at home provides a somber context for the engaging story of the kind and inventive spirit of an entrepreneur dedicated to making stimulating toys. Having converted his toy factory to munitions work to support the war effort, Gilbert later objects persuasively when the government proposes that parents should boycott all Christmas toys for 1917 to put money into war bonds. There is no fantasy fluff or magical intervention in this Christmas film, but the power of a determined visionary to enrich the lives of millions of children can inspire us all with the essence of the holiday spirit.

Not bad for a tv movie. Alexander plays

Not bad for a tv movie. Alexander plays the toy maker Gilbert and forces the US Govt to not give up Christmas in WWI. What happed to New Haven, to CT? So much stuff was made here now if it wasn't for military subs and helicopters this state be left to the hubris hedge funds. ( I love how Jewish people [Àsner & Alexander] run to play Xmas roles. Can make money on it)
