Plot summary

In 1843, despite the fact that Dickens is a successful writer, the failure of his latest book puts his career at a crossroads, until the moment when, struggling with inspiration and confronting reality with his childhood memories, a new character is born in the depths of his troubled mind; an old, lonely, embittered man, so vivid, so human, that a whole world grows around him, a story so inspiring that changed the meaning of Christmas forever.

THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS is a charming historical dramedy chronicling Dickens's creative process producing A Christmas Carol, which changed the holiday forever. Loosely fact-based but surely inventive as well, it's a spirited imagining that celebrates redemptive creativity as well as the famous source material, and makes for quite an enjoyable holiday movie in its own right. The 2019 film The Personal History of David Copperfield takes a similar approach to Dickens, and is also recommended.

I wanted more. I like the idea of telling this meta story, and even the attempt of weaving Charles Dickens' own trauma, mental health, bipolar nature, and obsessive work habits into where some of the ideas for A Christmas Carol came from. Even if it's a fabrication, and those parallels are harder to make in reality, it could make for a good story. I like what they were trying to do, and some parts start to click a little more about an hour in. But I don't think it's very expertly guided or handled, both from a directorial perspective and an acting one. I think part of it is that Dan Stevens is just not my cup of tea. I've watched him in a lot of things, and his acting works better in something like FX's Legion with its weird, quirky, artsy arrangement... but not so much here. Even playing an eccentric character, I don't find him compelling or particularly skillful. As a result, it's hard to... [continued on letterboxd]
