Plot summary

When filmmaker and investigative journalist Frances Causey, a daughter of the South, set out to explore the continuing racial divisions in the US, what she discovered was that the politics of slavery didn't end with the Civil War. In an astonishingly candid look at the United States' original sin, The Long Shadow traces slavery's history from America's founding up through its insidious ties to racism today.

I just viewed the documentary with fellow retired

I just viewed the documentary with fellow retired teachers in Illinois. Since I taught US History 1850-1960, I was familiar with much of the material. The fact that Frances Causey is a descendant of the man who wrote white supremacy language into the Virginia constitution is refreshing for a southern woman of privilege to look back retrospectively at her family's history of slavery. It is very well done with pertinent images of vintage pictures, movie and audio clips, and prominent black professor lend credence to the film. Two thumbs up!!!

Very strong documentary detailing the history of US

Very strong documentary detailing the history of US slavery and how the institutions created to support it are still enmeshed in our country's systems, both political and economic. A good "systemic racism 101" movie to watch with others and discuss in groups.
