Plot summary

A historical drama that illustrates Russian author Leo Tolstoy's struggle to balance fame and wealth with his commitment to a life devoid of material things. The Countess Sofya, wife and muse to Leo Tolstoy, uses every trick of seduction on her husband's loyal disciple, whom she believes was the person responsible for Tolstoy signing a new will that leaves his work and property to the Russian people.

You have one of the more notable writers

You have one of the more notable writers in history and his life as rich subject matter, a cast of exemplary actors, and what? The first 10 minutes of the film show nothing but aimless wandering, the boring interiors of buildings, and desultory, vapid conversation. What is the director trying to communicate, other than his ability to waste time and film? Good grief, what a piece of fluff!

I enjoyed this film, as a somewhat laid

I enjoyed this film, as a somewhat laid back drama about the final year of Leo Tolstoy's life. I thought Helen Mirren's performance was quite good and James McAvoy also does well (with the main character played by Christopher Plummer). It's somewhat poignant and otherwise certainly thought-provoking at times. One line of dialogue, from an exasperated Chertkov, that made me smirk somewhat goes as follows:- "If I had a love like you, I'd have blown my brains out...or gone to America!". I enjoyed the settings and the showcasing of human vulnerabilities, the talk of love, frustration and intimacy. Confrontation also plays a key role in this film. Overall I would recommend this film, yes.
