Meh...

Nothing great and nothing earth-shattering, this semi-documentary uses clips of old movies, mostly Hammer films and the original The Wicker Man to try to draw a similarity between a murder in modern-day England to witchcraft and Druid ceremonial sacrifices. Not that it's a bad attempt, it just doesn't do what it claims it's going to and the so-called similarities between the actual murder and The Wicker Man are really a stretch.

The Last Sacrifice: CClass, Condescension, and a Countryside Murder

The Last Sacrifice" (2024) offers an intriguing, if highly speculative, take on a 1945 murder in the English countryside. It's visually engaging, with evocative period footage and finely edited reconstructions that sustain interest throughout. Yet the film falters in tone: several commentators-urbane, left leaning, and seemingly 'above the the great unwashed', the case as an occasion to deliver sweeping, sardonic remarks about rural England. This air of superiority distracts from the historical mystery itself, leaving the documentary feeling more like a cultural sermon than a balanced investigation.
