'The Last Legion' was an unbearable experience. Before the first half hour was over, I was already checking the clock, bored, disconnected, and even falling asleep. Only the final half hour improves slightly; everything before that feels like a chore. The film reinterprets the King Arthur legend, but offers no meaningful message or memorable characters, relying instead on action, battles, and clichés. The cast isn’t annoying, but nobody stands out; the performances are lukewarm and the characters interchangeable, though Thomas Brodie-Sangster shows some dignity. Doug Lefler tries to make something out of a terrible script, but the abrupt, frantic editing ruins any potentially watchable moments. The visual effects don’t help either. Almost nothing works: it’s an empty, personality-free film that’s hard to recommend unless you truly have nothing better to do.

I enjoy epic sword and slaughter swashbucklers, and as they go, this one is pretty average. The dialogue is a little stilted, with the acting and characters just adequate. Visually, too, looks a little dated, now that it's 18 years old. If you're a big fan of this genre, as I am, you won't regret watching, but if not, you may feel your time could have been better well-spent elsewhere.
