Plot summary

An international team of scientists venture into the virtually unknown interior of Antarctica to explore a lake buried 3,600 feet beneath the ice. Their success hinges on the performance of their custom-built hot water drill and their ability to work as a team in the harshest climate on the planet. As they struggle against the ferocity of the ice and wind to unravel mysteries buried deep under Antarctica, they consider how our relationship with nature – and with one another — will impact humanity’s future and the future of all life on our rapidly changing planet.

I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary. Scientific work, like engineering difficult problems, is not always exciting and often tedious and boring. However the need for such exploration and experimentation goes far beyond typical endeavors and shows us just how much work goes into understanding the world around us. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone.

This should be renamed "The boring life of the crusty scientists who study, the lake at the bottom of the world." At no point do we actually see this lake at the bottom of the world. An hour in we get a few stills of the bacteria and other micro-organisms that live in the lake. The rest of the time is people in tents and sheds talking about how cold it is.

Moseying along the ice

6.7 stars.I would not elect to see this ever again, it's a one time watch. It's sufficiently entertaining enough to sit through once. It's a basic documentary about scientists in Antarctica who are attempting to get soil samples from a sub arctic lake. The lake is over 1000 feet below the surface of the ice, where the scientists are camped out in large tents. They have erected temporary, but sophisticated tent-lab structures, where they can do basic testing and analyzing samples. This documentary is basically a short story of how they are having difficulty getting good samples. They explain why they are doing the research and the obstacles they face. Most of this is camera work and minimal dialogue as we watch people move around. Once in a while, we get to enjoy a bit of fragmented conversation or comments, a pithy remark here and there, some science humor, a bit of nerves due to sleep deprivation... but everyone is happy to be here. You can feel the excitement about their profession and their dreams of being a part of Antarctica science expeditions. I don't know if these people are paid, they probably are, but if a person wanted to volunteer to further scientific research, this would probably be a fun thing to consider.
