Brad Bird's sister, Susan, was killed by her estranged husband in a murder-suicide. His pitch to Warner Bros. was based on the idea: "What if a gun had a soul, and didn't want to be a gun?". The film was dedicated to Susan and Ted Hughes, the author of the book "The Iron Man" which served as inspiration for the movie.
