Nostalgia at its best! The artwork is fantastic but very 70's as is the overly folks/hippie music. But Gollum is fantastic and terrified me as kid. Keep in mind that this was made for TV and has awkward cuts that were there for comercial breaks.

Rating: 7.3/10 A charming, nostalgic adaptation capturing the folky heart of Tolkien's novel. Highlights - Unique Visuals: Inspired by Arthur Rackham illustrations, with gritty, earthy character designs. - Legendary Voices: John Huston, Brother Theodore, and Richard Boone deliver standout performances. - Iconic Soundtrack: Folk-ballad theme "The Greatest Adventure" sets the tone. Criticisms - Fast Pacing: Short runtime rushes key plot points and omits some characters. - Outdated Animation: May feel stiff and limited by modern standards. Verdict A fascinating piece of animation history and love letter to Tolkien's work. Recommended for Tolkien fans, 70s animation enthusiasts, and families.

Only watched because recommended for the grandkids. I never read any Tolkien and was unfamiliar with the story. The animation was dark and crude. Some of the dialog was incomprehensible (the nonsense about riddles in the cave). I guess The Lord of the Rings stuff is an acquired taste and this would not be the best introduction.
