Plot summary

Teenagers Rose and Bennett were in love, and then a car crash claimed Bennett's life. He left behind a grieving mother, father and younger brother, and Rose was left all alone. She has no family to turn to for support, so when she finds out she's pregnant, she winds up at the Brewer's door. She needs their help, and although they can't quite admit it, they each need her so they can begin to heal.

The concept is interesting, but the script appears

The concept is interesting, but the script appears to have been written by someone who has heard about human emotions and behavior by third hand. The accident happens because the young man decides to stop his car in the middle of a country road late at night. Brosnan, who otherwise is good, avoids touching his grieving wife neither coming back from the funeral nor when she sobs as she wakes up every morning. Otherwise, he says he is very concerned. The pregnant penniless girlfriend of the dead boy moves to the parents’ house and start redecorating the room she was offered. In her first interaction with her dead boyfriend’s brother she diagnosed him with a fever and reveals that her mother is in rehab. Sarandon, the depressed mother goes through periods of hallucinations, but she is also allowed to sit by herself at the bedside of the comatose young man who killed her son. A hospital that permits something like this will last about a month before it incurs an avalanche of lawsuits.

The premise was interesting, but the execution of

The premise was interesting, but the execution of it was daunting. The mother could undoubtedly be upset about the events of her son passing in a freak car accident, but to wholeheartedly take it out on the pregnant girl is weird to me. The other son's drug use wasn't fully explained (at least I don't remember them explaining it) and I'm guessing the father had an affair at some point. Yes, there were a messy and dysfunctional family, and dealing with their grief that placed burdens on this young pregnant girl with her own issues. That just doesn't seem realistic to me.

Not the most original story but so well

Not the most original story but so well executed and each performance was a gem. Wonderful to see Brosnan in a role that gave him some range. He was excellent. Mulligan had that special shine she always showed us in those years. Such a fine actress and Sarandon was perfect. I especially enjoyed the actor who played the younger brother. He kept it real, though the subplot with the girl he met in the group was a little weak. If I could guess at the moment they met how that would end....it just seemed an unnecessary complication. Overall loved this film and will probably watch it again in a few years.
